Nitrous oxide emissions from tropical hydroelectric reservoirs

چکیده
[1] We report original data on nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes from two tropical reservoirs, their rivers below the dam, and from natural aquatic ecosystems and rainforest soils in French Guiana and Panama. We also review published N2O fluxes from other tropical reservoirs and natural environments. We show that: (1) N2O emissions from tropical reservoirs occur mainly at the reservoir surface, fluxes downstream of dams being minor; (2) Because preflooding natural N2O fluxes are significant, the net N2O emissions from reservoirs are less than 50–70% of gross N2O emissions; (3) the contribution of N2O to the global warming potential of emissions from reservoirs could be significant for gross emissions, but less than 10% for net emissions, disregarding N2O degassing emissions. The Issue of Greenhouse Gases from Hydroelectric Reservoirs: from Boreal to Tropical Regions
The role of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from freshwater reservoirs and their contribution in increasing atmospheric GHG concentrations is actually well discussed worldwide. The amount of GHGs emitted at the air-water interface of reservoirs varies over time. The maximum is attained within 3 to 5 years after impoundment. In reservoirs older >10 years in boreal and semi-arid regions, GHG emiss...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal patterns of greenhouse gas emissions from Three Gorges Reservoir of China
Anthropogenic activity has led to significant emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG), which is thought to play important roles in global climate changes. It remains unclear about the kinetics of GHG emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous Oxide (N2O) from the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) of China, which was formed after the construction of the famous Three Gorges Dam. He...
متن کاملUncertainties of carbon emission from hydroelectric reservoirs
Anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have substantially contributed to intensification of heavy precipitation and thus the risk of flood occurrence, and this anthropogenic climate change is now likely to continue for many centuries. Thus, precise quantification of human-induced GHG emissions is urgently required for modeling future global warming and precipitation changes, which is stro...
متن کاملThroughfall exclusion and leaf litter addition drive higher rates of soil nitrous oxide emissions from a lowland wet tropical forest
Tropical forests are a significant global source of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). Predicted environmental changes for this biome highlight the need to understand how simultaneous changes in precipitation and labile carbon (C) availability may affect soil N 2O production. We conducted a small-scale throughfall and leaf litter manipulation in a lowland tropical forest in southwestern Co...
متن کاملDirect Nitrous Oxide Emissions From Tropical And Sub-Tropical Agricultural Systems - A Review And Modelling Of Emission Factors
There has been much debate about the uncertainties associated with the estimation of direct and indirect agricultural nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in developing countries and in particular from tropical regions. In this study, we report an up-to-date review of the information published in peer-review journals on direct N2O emissions from agricultural systems in tropical and sub-tropical region...
